The great crested grebe is the size of a duck and has a very distinctive reddish brown coloured feather crest. Its courtship is one of the highlights of our water life nature experience. The mating pair carries out an impressing synchronous dance and passes over small presents as signs of affection. It is particularly spectacular to watch both partners rising chest to chest in a nearly vertical body position on the water, wildly hitting their wings and embracing the neck of the partner. The caring parents protectively carry their cute grey and white striped children on their backs. Young grebes get soft downy feathers for the first meal, in order to avoid scratching the throat and stomach with fish bones. The main grebes call is a loud melancholic ,,korr'', which is emblematic and characteristic for the atmosphere at our lakes.
