The kingfisher is a true flying jewel due to its glamorous blaze and rich assortment of vivid colours. No one, who at least once had the opportunity to observe the kingfisher fishing, can deny the fascinating nature of this species. Its name originates from the Old High German word „eisan“, meaning shimmering and shining. And the name “shimmering bird” fits perfectly to the kingfisher's fascinating and opulent array of colours it displays. Despite its ice blue feathers, the word „Eis“ (eng: ice) did not influence the origin of his name, quite on the contrary in fact, ice is its biggest enemy, as frozen water ditches and rivers in hard winter cause massive famine in the species. The kingfisher's call is a short and sharp whistling „chi”, sometimes dissyllabic „chi-keeeee”.
